The Power Of Subliminal Messaging
Subliminal, in a literal definition, means “below the threshold of consciousness”, and by sending subliminal messages you are directing messages in a way that cannot be perceived consciously; only subconsciously.
In everyday life subliminal techniques are used as a powerful advertising tool to persuade the subconscious. Given the subconscious mind is around 90 per cent of your total mind power – as opposed to the 10 per cent of the mind that you routinely use in your daily waking state – it makes perfect sense.
Advertisers have, for a long time, seen the benefits of using subliminal messaging as a tool to cement a brand. This was evident when subliminal images and messages promoting popcorn and coke at cinemas resulted in significant increases in sales of both items.
Subliminal messaging was deemed to be so powerful that the US government actively tried to ban it from television and radio advertising back in the 1970s. They were unsuccessful.
Companies and the government are obsessed with subliminal messages because they are effective at manipulating your thought patterns at the subconscious level; because subliminal messages are designed to target your subconscious mind, you are usually not aware that you are being ‘manipulated’.
If you have a spare six minutes, take a look at this video, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZyQjr1YL0zg which demonstrates how clearly the unconscious brain takes in the surrounding without awareness. It’s really interesting.
Why are we talking about subliminal messaging?
Because we are a promotions company; we develop solutions for marketing challenges and believe wholeheartedly in the power of promotional products to build brand awareness and influence consumer behaviour.
The British Promotional Merchandise Association (BPMA) have conducted research that shows a direct correlation between the promotional product advertiser and an improvement in brand recognition and increase in sales.
The study surveyed 15,000 participants who had received a promotional product for free within the last 12 months.
- 66 per cent claimed they could recall the promotional product received
- 79 per cent would likely do business with the company again.
- Of the participants, 87 per cent kept a promotional item for longer than a year.
Interestingly, the statistics showed how promotional items can change buyer behaviour and how many consumers are willing to switch brands in order to receive a free promotional gift.
So, from increasing brand awareness to a direct correlation to sales, a gift with purchase guarantees longevity and, in turn, keeps your brand top of mind through powerful subliminal reinforcement. It’s well worth the investment.
In other words: PROMOTIONAL PRODUCTS WORK!
